
In the 1962 election for Governor, Detroit’s suburbs flipped from long-standing Democratic support to voting for the Republican candidate.
Detroit broadly supported the Democratic candidate, but in 1962 it wasn’t enough to secure a win. The Detroit Free Press interviewed voters who flipped and most cited a bill introduced by a Macomb County State Representative, John T. Bowman, whose bill would have blocked Detroit from levying an income tax on non-residents.
