Map of Detroit’s Planned Expressway Construction May 5, 2014 By Alex B. Hill There once was a time when expressways were simply ideas on a map. Their detrimental effects on neighborhoods of color can still be seen today. Not sure of the year this map was made. Any ideas? My guess is early 1950s, since I-94 is under construction but not yet designated as an Interstate. Reply
This map seems to be issued by the City Plan Commission in January 1950. Cf. R. Biles. 2014. “Expressways before the Interstates: The Case of Detroit, 1945-1956”, Journal of Urban History, vol. 40, n°5 (p. 849). Reply
